#LEDGER LIVE ACCOUNT MANUAL#The controller key is a semi-online key that will be in the direct control of a user, and used to submit manual extrinsics. When creating new controller or stash keys, all cryptography supported by account keys are an available option. All the info mentioned applies to these keys. They are distinguished by their intended use, not by an underlying cryptographic difference. When we talk about “controller” and “stash” keys, we usually talk about them in the context of running a validator or nominating DOT, but they are useful concepts for all users to know. It is actually recommended that you change your controller account from time to time. You can change your controller account without unbonding in polkadot.js under the network->account actions-> then click the three dots on the right side of the browser window next to “stop”, then click “change controller account”. Both, your “stash” and “controller” wallet account can be managed through polkadot.js. Ideally, you can use your Ledger cold wallet as the “stash” wallet account and the polkadot.js browser wallet as your “controller” to stake as a nominator. It is arguably easier to Stake on Ledger Live, but they don’t support Crowdloans for example. Using the same idea of 2 interfaces to the same thing, it’s also worth noting that, in this example, polka.js offers all the functionality available, while Ledger Live allows only part of the functionality albeit with a more slick and user friendly interface. It’s the same account, you’re just using a different interface to interact with it. The difference between using Ledger Live or polkadot.js is similar to logging onto Twitter from your browser or from your mobile app. A slightly tighter security that diminishes vectors of attack and compromise to your keys. However, if you sign in with a Ledger, the seed phrase is never exposed even on a device with malware. If, say, you type your seed phrase into polkadot.js using a computer with a keylogger or malware, you’ll potentially compromise it. Using the actual hardware Ledger is only more secure in the sense that the seed phrase never leaves the hardware wallet. To this point, as long as the seed phrase used for both are the same, then, for all practical purposes, it’s the exact same account. Is it still possible to select a different account on polkadot.js as my controller account?
